I like Australia
I really do.
Despite an exchange rate that often makes me weep, 4-hour flights surrounded by the worst of humanity, and delivering some of the most gratuitously annoying wildlife I never thought possible, I still head across the vast and treacherous Tasman Sea 3-4 times a year.

WatchThis is Holy Ghost! performing live their song “Jam for Jerry” last year.
The song features on their debut self-titled album and is a memorial of sorts for Jerry Fuchs, who died tragically in 2009. Where the song is really quite upbeat, the lyrics mournfully speak to a friend that passed away too soon. Listening to this song makes me both smile and want to cry.

Any news is good news
We’ve heard that family are ok, but their houses are rubble.
Workmates are ok, but the office down there is a wreck.
Sadly, no word yet from friends in the area.
The TV footage of the CBD is a little hard to watch. We were only down there a couple weeks back, and looking at the widespread damage throughout the CBD was staggering enough, but this is something else.

Twitter Revelations: Parent Edition
Mum: I saw your tweets while you were in Auckland.
Me: … what?
Mum: Yes, I was on the NZ Herald website looking through their photos at that thing you went to. I wanted to see if you were in any of them.
Me: WHAT???
Mum: Your tweets were on their website. All mofo this and mofo that.
Me: … *speechless*
Mum: You and Russell Bailey seemed to spend more time tweeting than enjoying yourselves.
Me: … *speechless with a look of despair*
- this awkward conversation was had the night following the Auckland Laneway, and followed a day where I’d almost missed my flight back to Wellington, had almost no sleep in four days, still suffered a throbbing hangover, had fronted a select committee hearing that afternoon on a bill I didn’t really understand, all only to culminate in a sudden and urgent need to pee.
Put more simply, I wasn’t exactly at my best.
